MI7703 Human Rights Leadership Seminar

Social Justice as Apologetic Communications

I. Course Description

This course will survey the theological and moral basis for human rights as a critical safeguard for human dignity and an expression of the love of God. The course will examine major human rights concepts ? and the common grace foundation for those concepts -- as well as some of the modern distortions of human rights ideals, including those that pose a growing challenge to the freedoms of faith communities and faith-based institutions. Finally, an effort will be made to equip students to engage in “apologetic communications” on behalf of an authentic understanding of human rights rooted in the compassion and mercy of God. The course will also examine some of the most fundamental human rights challenges facing both the Korean peninsula and the Asian region as well as the significant opportunities that they present for effective social leadership both inside and outside the faith community.

II. Course Objective

The objective of this course is to provide students with a common grace foundation for addressing critical human rights issues as an opportunity to communicate the mercy and love of God. The Korean peninsula and the Asian region face some of the most important social justice challenges of our time. So thoughtful and informed leadership on critical human rights issues is both a moral imperative and tremendous opportunity for “apologetic communications” that demonstrates the compassion of God for all people.
